The Calgary Zoo has one less peacock wandering its grounds after a male peacock flew into a golf cart last week.
A zoo spokesperson said a staff member was driving a golf cart before opening hours Thursday morning when the peacock suddenly flew into the cart.
“One of our staff was driving a golf cart around, doing regular morning work, and unfortunately a peacock flew into the windshield,” Trish Exton-Parder said.
“The animal care team immediately came over to try to revive the bird, but their efforts were unsuccessful,” she said, adding it’s standard procedure for zoo staff to use golf carts on the grounds.
“We know it was horrible for the person driving and really just a tragic situation, so difficult for the staff, those things are quite shocking,” she said.
Exton-Parder said the zoo doesn’t keep the birds in an enclosure because it wouldn’t be the best situation for them.
“We have no issue with them being able to wander, people are respectful, but the odd situation like this can potentially happen.”
There are now five peacocks remaining at the Calgary Zoo. Another peacock died last November after it flew into the lion enclosure and was attacked.
