What was once a popular destination for families is closing its doors officially this weekend. In January, the Imax Theatre in Portage Place Shopping Centre announced it was no longer feasible to keep it open.
The theatre was one of the original tenants in Portage Place but recently it’s been unable to fill even half of its seats for a show so it’s preparing to close for good March 31. The theatre is owned by the Forks North Portage Partnership. The organization says the fact that the theater is unable to secure new Hollywood movies when they’re released has hurt it. Polo Park Shopping Centre also recently opened its own Imax Theatre that can show new releases.
This weekend, the theater is offering a free showing of the first film that showed on its screen 25 years ago, Heartland. It will play Sunday at 12:00 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:45 p.m.
Otherwise this weekend, patrons can catch Egypt 3D: Secrets of Mummies, Hubble 3D, Tornado Alley 3D, Everest, Born to be Wild 3D, Pulse: a Stomp Odyssey, To the Arctic 3D, and Coral Reef Adventure. For ticket information go to imaxwinnipeg.com.
