Car sharing services are popping up across B.C., and the provincial government is looking at how it might make auto insurance more easily available to people using them.

Attorney General David Eby says it’s working with car sharing app developers to streamline the process: “How do we provide a more seamless experience for their users?”

The Insurance Corporation of B.C. has what they need, he says.

“But it’s certainly not seamless and it certainly wasn’t designed for these kinds of apps and sharing economy type things,” he says. “So what we’re doing is we’re engaged in conversations with this company and companies like them for people who want to rent their cars out in that way.”

As far as how many people are getting insurance for renting cars on apps, ICBC says they can’t distinguish rentals through traditional car rental companies from those through apps.
