Legendary actor Robert Redford has confirmed he is retiring from the world of acting following his upcoming movie, The Old Man & The Gun.
The 81-year-old actor made the announcement in an interview with EW, noting that his role in the David Lowery-directed film would be his last.
The film stars Redford as infamous criminal Forrest Tucker, a man who robbed banks for over 60 years and who was best known for breaking out of prison, multiple times. It was this escape artist routine which drew Redford to the role.
“The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?” he told EW.

Redford’s career in the TV and film industry started in 1960 and he’s starred in many all-time classic movies, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men, and Out of Africa. He also won an Oscar for Best Director in 1981 for his film Ordinary People.
The Old Man & The Gun, which co-stars Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits, will be released on September 28, and will also be playing at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
