CSBC and OPP launch ‘Operation Dry Water’ for long weekend

The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and provincial police are reminding boaters to be safe and stay clear of alcohol when taking to the waters this holiday weekend.

In an effort to raise awareness and reduce alcohol- and drug-related deaths, the CSBC and the OPP are launching “Operation Dry Water” for the sixth consecutive year.

Police say drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40 per cent of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways.

With the upcoming legalization of cannabis, police add that they are taking extra measures to warn boaters about the dangers of mixing marijuana and alcohol while out on the water.

Police say that boaters will be charged with Impaired Operation of a Vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if they are found to be impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Whether you are a boat operator or passenger, police would like to remind you that you have a role to play in helping ensure that no one operates a vessel while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
