Winnipeg police are trying to figure out why a cyclist tried to evade officers resulting in some dramatic moments downtown Thursday.
Video footage from a vehicle waiting at a red light on Fort Street at Portage Avenue recorded the action.
The dash-cam shows a man on his bike seemingly fly out of nowhere and bounce off the car. The rider jumps up and takes off on foot as an unmarked police car screeches to a stop. The officer abandons his car to give chase, leaving drivers and pedestrians at the intersection to clean up the mess.
Cst. Rob Carver told Global News the police officer noticed the man on the bike cutting in and out of traffic on Portage Avenue and then drive through a red light. When he attempted to pull the cyclist over, he bolted.

Police say they caught up with the suspect about a block and half away. However, they couldn’t find any reason why the man worked so hard to get away.
“I have no idea why anyone would do this. I will tell you the individual wasn’t wanted. As far as we could tell he hadn’t committed a crime. We ended up arresting him and making sure he had medical attention,” Carver said.
