There is no information on cause of Smith’s death at this time. Smith was active on social media up to the time he died, posting pictures on Twitter.

Smith was a native of Cape Breton and had two children.

Smith won a SOCAN songwriter of the year ECMA in 2009 for co-writing “We are young and so is the night” with Gordie Sampson. Last week, Smith’s band played at Canadian Music Week in Toronto while touring with Matt Mays.

Matt Mays says his band will continue their tour in honour of Smith. On Wednesday night, the band played in Calgary at Central Flames. Pictures from the concert show Mays wearing a wreath of flowers and holding a candle in memory of Smith.

Mays starts a US tour in April.

Proceeds from the remaining shows will go into a trust for Smith’s children, Mays said.
