Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Waterloo region

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Waterloo Region.

The weather office said areas of strong to severe thunderstorms are moving eastward at 70 km/h. Wind gusts of 90 km/h may be associated with these storms as well as large hail.

The Guelph area was under a severe thunderstorm warning, but that was downgraded to a watch at around 4 p.m.

In a statement, Environment Canada said the wind gusts could toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

The threat for severe thunderstorms will end in all areas later this evening, according to the agency.
