Could Dooher's Bakery be the sweetest bakery in Canada? They are in the running and currently sit second in a national competition – Jul 24, 2018

Dooher’s Bakery in Campbellford has been hailed the number one bakery in Northumberland County, but how does it stack up against competition across the country?

The family-run bakery, founded in 1949, is in the running for a national prize that would bring with it the title of “Sweetest Bakery in Canada” and a $10,000 prize.

The voting wraps up on July 31st and Dooher’s has been steadily climbing the standings from a top-20 position to second across the country. Staff, meanwhile, say they’re really feeling the support.

“At first we were like ‘we’re just a little bakery in Trent Hills and Campbellford and how can we compare to the rest of the nation?'” said Alannah Haig, marketing and business manager for Dooher’s Bakery. “It’s been incredible, and now that we’re in second place we want to get to first.”

The bakery has become a staple in the community, where all goods are prepared from scratch and come from original recipes that have been passed down from one generation of the Dooher family to the next.

On weekends, those customers who might have slept in could find themselves missing out on a sweet treat as the shelves empty quickly.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“On a typical Saturday in the summertime, we’ll do over 4,000 donuts and, generally speaking, we’re sold out by noon,” said third-generation baker Cory Dooher. “And if you don’t place an order, you just don’t get them by walking in.”

Staff say they’ve been overwhelmed by the support inside the bakery from loyal, returning customers and all the support online and on social media.

Voting for the competition wraps up on July 31st to cast a vote visit the Dawn Foods website or cast a ballot in person at the Bakery.
