Victoria has announced this morning it will be handing out an additional 4,000 smoke alarms to seniors throughout the province.
Research shows seniors make up nearly one-third of all fire victims in B.C., even though they account for just 15 per cent of the province’s population.

“With more seniors comes the need to emphasize fire safety with them in mind,” says Minister of Justice Shirley Bond. “Our research tells us that seniors are at greater risk of a tragic outcome if a fire breaks out at home…and our smoke alarm campaign is going to help more seniors be better prepared.”
In recent years, Vancouver’s senior population has grown rapidly.
A new report shows there are now more than 300,000 seniors living in that city alone.
