Hitting a high note: Calgary’s first outdoor opera set to open

CALGARY- Some sweet sounds will be coming to the East Village this summer.

The Calgary Opera is launching an annual festival on the banks of the Bow River, that will be the first outdoor summer opera festival in Canada.

The first year of Opera in the Village will feature The Pirates of Penzance, featuring a Canadian cast including Calgary’s own David LeReaney. The show will take place in a 900 seat tent with six performances over four days.

The theme will also move outside, with the whole site filled with activities including sword-fighting demonstrations, impromptu opera performances, outdoor movie nights and food trucks.
