A joint investigation between three agencies is underway after a late night blaze at an apartment building east of the downtown core sent a young child to hospital and caused approximately $800,000 in damage.

Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the scene of an active fire on King Street near Lyle Street.

“When [crews] arrived the fire was on a balcony, it had spread into the house and up into the attic space,” said assistant deputy fire chief Jack Burt.

About 30 people had to be evacuated from their apartments due to spreading smoke and water damage, said Burt.

The front of units 13 and 14 in the Tol Puddle housing complex appear badly burned.

Insulation can be seen poking through the bottom of the balcony, while ash and other charred objects litter the ground.

Early Monday morning, the smell of smoke still lingered in the air.

“There was one injury, a six-year-old went to hospital for smoke inhalation. He was treated and released,” said Burt.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A Fire Marshall has assigned a fire investigator to this fire who will be assisting London Police and London Fire Department with determining the origin and cause,” said Burt.

King Street is open, but it has been reduced to one lane from Adelaide Street to Lyle Street while they investigate, said police.
