Now that the mosquito scene is in full force, I thought I’d
try out a high tech bug bite solution. The Therapik $14 at Walmart and Mountain Equipment Co-op
or online at www.therapik.com offers an alternative choice to liquid or
cream-based bug bite reliefs.
It works by producing a fixed amount of infrared heat over
the bite area on your skin, raising the temperature to 50C, 2mm deep. Treatments
last up to about 30 seconds, or as long as you feel comfortable with the spot
heat.

It works on most common stings and bites that use
THERMOLABILE venom by using heat to neutralize the venom and increase blood flow
in the affected area.
The Therapik runs on a 9 volt battery that seems to last a
long time.
I found it worked on four out of five bites, similar to the
popular AfterBite ammonia liquid stick. But it is dry and odorless.
It can handle a variety of bug bites including mosquitoes,
bees, wasps, hornets, black flies, ants, fleas, ticks, chiggers and even
jellyfish and stinging nettle…but not spiders, scorpions and snakes.
