The Brock Street Mission project includes 30 shelter beds and 15 single rooms for men. Originally budgeted at $7.5 million, costs have ballooned to $10.7 million due to increases in the cost of materials and labour. The staff report on the project says an option for council to pay the over-run is to dip into reserves.

“The $3.2 million dollars is coming from two areas in the city’s reserves. A portion of it is coming from social housing, about $1.2 million dollars, with the remainder coming for social services,” says Richard Freymond, manager of financial services.

But the staff report, which will go to Peterborough city council Monday evening, contains other options rather than using reserves.  For example, the construction tender could be cancelled and a new one issued.  Councillor Lesley Parnell says everyone agrees how important the project is to the city but adds she anticipates all councillors will spend the weekend going over the staff report to be ready for the debate

“I don’t think anyone is happy with the amount of money that has been quoted on the tender, so council as a whole, sitting as a general committee on Monday, will discuss this report,” says city councilor Lesley Parnell

Council meets at 5:30 Monday evening
