Ways to celebrate Canada Day 2018 in Edmonton

Whatever your fancy, there are a variety of events taking place in the Edmonton area on July 1 to celebrate Canada Day.

Canada Day fireworks

When: 11 p.m.

What: The city’s Canada Day fireworks display will take place over the river valley. If you can’t watch in-person, the city also offers a livestream online.

Where: There are two locations in Edmonton where fireworks will be set off: downtown and Mill Woods.

Downtown: The city suggests the best viewing locations are the Legislature Grounds, Victoria Park, Government House Park, Ezio Faraone Park and RE/MAX Field (anyone at the Prospects game is welcome to stay at the stadium to watch the fireworks). Other spots accessible on foot include River Valley Road, Walterdale Hill Road and Queen Elizabeth Park Road, 109 Street, Walterdale Hill and the High Level and Menzies bridges once roads are closed.

Mill Woods: The fireworks are best viewed from Mill Woods park (66 Street and 23 Avenue.) There is no public parking in Mill Woods Park but those with physical handicaps can be dropped off at the various parking lots. There is limited parking available at Mill Woods Town Centre or you can take public transit.

Canada Day pancake breakfast

When:  7 a.m. – 10 a.m.

What:  This year’s annual pancake breakfast will be hosted by the Ismaili Community and will include FREE pancakes, watermelon, music and games.

Where: south grounds Alberta Legislature

Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature

When: Noon – 9 p.m.

What:  Enjoy live performances, ceremonial events along with other family themed events on the historic grounds of the legislature.

Where: Alberta legislature building and grounds, Federal Building and Capital Plaza

Edmonton Valley Zoo

When:  11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What:  Oh Canada! “Get Closer” celebrates not only our nation’s birthday but the Valley Zoo’s birthday as well. Help the zoo celebrate by taking part in a scavenger hunt, learning about our native animal species, listening to live music and enjoying a cupcake.  Regular admission applies.

Muttart Conservatory

When:  11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What:  Enjoy live music by Peter and Mary, mini cupcakes and wood carving demonstrations. Regular admission applies.

Where:  9626 96A St.

Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration

When:  1 p.m. – 11 p.m.

What:  This community celebration is filled with family friendly fun including a petting zoo, live entertainment, hay rides and carnival games, and fireworks — all FREE to the public.

Where: Mill Woods Park (66 Street and 23 Avenue)

Chinatown Night Market

When:  1 p.m. – 8 p.m.

What:  If you enjoy cultural displays and shopping for unique trinkets and crafts, the night market is for you! The event also includes a community BBQ.

Where:  Wong’s Benevolent Association (96 Street and 102 Avenue)

The Works Art & Design Festival

When:  11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.

What:   Make Canada-themed art on Canada Day! All activities by donation.

Where:  Capital Plaza on the grounds of the Alberta legislature

Art Gallery of Alberta

When:  10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

What: Activities for the whole family, view new exhibitions. Free admission for Canada Day. Last admission is at 4:30 p.m.

Where:  2 Sir Winston Churchill Square

Edmonton Transit will be operating on a regular Sunday schedule, including a special late fireworks service. Late Night Owl Service will be available until 3 a.m. on Routes 1, 4, 8, 9 and 512.

Routes that normally end between 10 p.m. and midnight on Sunday evenings will be extended past midnight. Route 589 will operate on its regular Saturday schedule. Visit edmonton.ca/CanadaDay for complete service details.
