SYDNEY, N.S. – Cape Breton school children are being asked to help name a park on a industrial site where steel was once produced.

The former Sydney steel plant, coke ovens and tar ponds sites in downtown Sydney are nearing the end of a 10-year, $400-million remediation project.

Meggan Desmond, spokeswoman for the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, said the naming contest for the park that will be on the site is open to all students across Cape Breton from Primary to Grade 12.

The submission deadline is April 19, with the winner set to be announced in mid-June.

A committee representing federal and provincial governments, who funded the cleanup, along with officials from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, First Nations and African-Nova Scotia communities will decide on 10 finalists.

A winner will be selected in online voting that will be open to everyone in Canada.
