UPDATE: A girl of about seven years of age who was briefly the subject of an Amber Alert was found safe and sound at a relative’s house, Quebec provincial police said Saturday.

Police said the child was allegedly abducted in Matane, on Quebec’s Gaspe Peninsula at around 10:45 Saturday morning.

Police issued the alert at about 1:15 p.m. and the girl was located about half an hour later near Lac-au-Saumon, some 75 kilometres further south.

A 26-year-old male suspect was intercepted in his vehicle and arrested.

He was being questioned by investigators as of Saturday afternoon and police said it was too early to say whether he will face charges.

A 19-year-old woman, who police describe as a second alleged victim, was found safe in the vehicle.

Police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe said the young girl and the 19-year-old were walking in the street together when they were both allegedly taken into the suspect’s vehicle.

An Amber Alert is activated in cases when a child is abducted and police believe they are in danger of serious physical injury or death.
