A 58-year-old female cyclist has died after she was struck by a large flatbed truck near the University of Toronto St. George campus in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood late Tuesday morning.
Emergency services responded to a call about a cyclist struck around noon at St. George and Bloor Streets. Investigators said the truck was travelling northbound on George and was turning east onto Bloor when it struck the cyclist.
Toronto police said the woman was without vital signs and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver remained at the scene.
The victim has not yet been identified.
“It could be you. It could be me …,” cyclist Alexandra Flynn told Global News on Tuesday. “This is so sad and I’m so sorry for her family and her loved ones.”
Bloor was closed from Huron Street to Devonshire Place and St. George was closed from Prince George Avenue to Sussex Avenue as police investigated.
Const. Clint Stibbe told Global News this is the 32nd person killed on the streets of Toronto in 2018, compared to 27 at this time in 2017.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
“There’s a large amount of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as vehicle traffic that comes through this area,” Stibbe said. “Somebody had to have seen something, so even if it’s something small and you did see it and you were continuing on your way, we are asking that you contact us as soon as possible.”
