3D Technology

Just when I thought I heard the last of the 3D hoopla, I receive two new 3D smartphones. I kind of rolled my eyes at first but I have to confess, these 3D phones, the LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D. But they are glasses-free, they don’t need 3D glasses, the screen is 3D when viewing 3D content. This means you can get into 3D content any time by simply taking pictures or movies in 3D mode and view the results instantly. Unlike 3D TV, you have to find your sweet spot when looking at 3D on these large screen phones, similar to the Nintendo 3DS.

They are heavy and hard to just slip into any pocket, but also function in 3D mode looking as sharp as most 2D phones. These are not your everyday phones but they get great 3D results. Both include external micro SD memory slots and have 4G capability. Let’s take a closer look:

The HTC EVOT 3D available at Rogers for $149.99 with three year plan, has dual 5 megapixel cameras and a quick fast access shutter button and 2D-3D switch. It runs on Android so it does all the good things normal Android phones do, from Google Apps, Maps, Gmail, social networking and more. Anything you do on this phone impresses with the 4.3-inch touch screen. Its stereoscopic 3D pictures and movies can play on other 3D devices including 3D capable TV’s using the HDMY out. The SRS WOWT HD surround sound is impressive foe a phone this size and adds to the 3D experience. It also has a front facing VGA camera for video conferencing and feature Wi-Fi Calling, the first Android through Rogers that for a flat fee lets you make unlimited calls from a WiFi hotspot you are registered without affecting your normal paid for talking plan. The EVO 3D also has. Mobile Hotspot capability, allowing up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 4G HSPA Network, including tablets, laptops, MP3 players, cameras, PDAs, portable gaming systems and more.

The LG Optimus 3D, also available at Rogers for $99.99 with plan, has Tri-Dual Configuration: Dual-Core, Dual-Channel and Dual-Memory for better 3D and HD performance than competitors. The fast access hot button fires up a very organized 3D menu to choose between 3D games, shooting in 3D, viewing your 3D album and a quick link for uploading your 3D to YouTube’s 3D site. That is cool. It too has a 4.3 – inch screen and a handy adjustment 3D effect onscreen touch bar. I also like the built-in HDMI out for quickly connecting to external screen sources. It too is an Android phone. http://www.lg.com/ca

Which one gives a better 3D experience? They are very close but the HTC does a better job of showing the 3D with wider sweet spots, not requiring as precise viewing angles, something all glasses-free screens have issues with. Both however show great 3D on outside devices.
