In a release on Monday, police said they were looking for Yuyang Guan, 26, and her husband Michael Bonnell, 30, for a well-being check. The Quality Inn Motel in Saint-Andre, N.B. had reported that they believed a woman had delivered a baby in one of its rented rooms.

Police said Bonnell and Guan had been staying at the motel since April 15 and believed the baby was born prior to May 25. RCMP said it was possible the couple was headed to Peterborough, Ont.

Within hours of releasing their photos, police said they located the couple and the baby at a motel in Edmundston late Monday.

RCMP Cpl. Jullie Rogers-Marsh told Global News the baby was in good health.

The baby was taken to hospital for observation and two dogs, who were discovered in “poor health,” were seized and turned over to animal care authorities.

“It appeared [the dogs] hadn’t been fed in quite some time,” Rogers-Marsh said.

The couple was arrested and appeared in Edmundston Provincial Court on Tuesday. Bonnell is charged with two counts of failing to provide the necessities of life. Guan is facing one count of the same charge.

They have been remanded into custody until their next court appearance on Thursday.

RCMP say the baby is now in the care of the Department of Social Development.
