A section of Hwy. 33 closed due to house fire in Loyalist Township

Loyalist Township Fire crews are investigating the cause of a house fire on Bath Road, West of Amherstview.

They were called to the scene at about 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday according to Fred Stephenson, Loyalist Township fire chief.

Six firetrucks and 22 firefighters attended, and the fire was deemed under control within about an hour of their arrival.

The owner of a nearby business says he is the person who called 911 after the homeowner ran over to tell him the house was on fire.

The man was the only one in the home when the fire started and Stephenson said the homeowner did the right thing by leaving as soon as he could.

There is “heavy smoke damage upstairs,” according to Stephenson, who added that about half of the downstairs of the home has a lot of fire damage.

A cause is unknown at this time.

Meanwhile, a section of Highway 33 will be closed to traffic for as long as fire investigators remain on scene.

Stephenson said the road closure had mostly to do with keeping the firefighters safe.

“People tend not to be watching the road,” said Stephenson about fire scenes.

“It’s a firefighter safety thing.”
