Holiday Eating! Proceed with Caution

Here's some frightening food for thought

The average Canadian gains 11 lbs between Thanksgiving and the New Year.  That's alot of weight… especially for a child struggling with weight.

Dr. Liann Meloff of Calgary's Childhood Obesity Clinic has some tips to keeping those pounds off!

> Plan, Plan, Plan:  Involve your children in those plans.  Thanksgiving dinner tonight – so what healthy choices can we make the rest of the week

> Balance: More food should mean more activity.  What holiday exercise can be new family traditions (Sledding, Skating, Nature Hikes, Wii Fit tournanments….)

> Trick or Treat Training:  Have a plan for halloween candy!  Have your kids help come up with the plan.  Dr. Meloff suggests:  Have Halloween be a free for all, eat as much as you can!   Plan to give some away and then make a two week strategy:  for example, 2 pieces a day for 2 weeks and after that – the candy is gone!

> Keep Christmas goodies out of sight most of the time.  Don't have chocolates and baking out for long periods of time… its too tempting for everyone!

> Make it a game and start now!  Dr. Meloff suggests everyone in the family steps on the scale now and then have a contest!  Who can maintain or even lose through the next couple months of temptation.
