The Edmonton Oilers weren’t as lucky as they have been in the past at this year’s NHL draft lottery.
The Oilers entered the night with the 9th best odds (5.0 per cent) at picking first overall. Instead, they dropped down one spot and will pick 10th overall in the 2018 NHL draft. The Oilers’ most likely scenario had been to stay at pick 9 (48.8 per cent). They had a 30.7 per cent chance at picking 10th.
The Oilers have picked 10th overall once before at the NHL draft. In 2009 they selected Magnus Paajarvi with the 10th pick.
The Oilers have won the NHL draft lottery twice in the past. In 2015 they won the rights to select superstar forward Connor McDavid. They also won the draft lottery in 2012 and selected forward Nail Yakupov.
This year’s NHL draft is being held from June 22-23 in Dallas.
