Some people are against the idea because they say that the hens will cause more bad than good.

They fear the hens will attract more predators like coyotes and will take money out of the pockets of local farmers.

Despite the concerns, the city is moving forward with the plan.

“With the concerns these days around food security, food quality and food price, it seems like the natural thing to try. Many municipalities are doing it so why not give it a try?” said Penticton city councilor Garry Litke.

“We will run a pilot project for 18 months and see if there are any concerns from neighbourhoods. We hope it will be successful.”

The original deadline for applications was April 5. However because there will be an information workshop on how to raise urban chickens on April 6, the city decided to extend the deadline until the middle of the month.
