Fire crews were called to a home in Kelowna near Reid’s Corner just after 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
Firefighters arrived at a house on the 2500-block of Sexsmith Road to find smoke coming from the back of the building.
Fire crews quickly put out the fire. It was contained to the basement laundry room, but there was smoke and water damage throughout the house.
One adult, two teenagers and four cats were home at the time, but all were safe.
Emergency support services have been notified that the family of four living in the home will not be able to stay there.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Kelowna Fire Department is reminding the public to check smoke detectors. In this case, officials said the alarm went off, warning the family about the fire.
