As the hockey world continues to mourn the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, another Saskatchewan community is doing what it can to help ease the pain.
Rosetown is hosting the Allan Cup, the national senior men’s hockey championship, and for those involved it’s a welcome distraction in a world turned upside down.
Bethune Bulldogs defenceman Russell Nielsen played for the Broncos for three seasons, serving as the team’s captain in 2007-08, his final year with the team.

“This does give us a chance to look at something positive and focus on a national championship that’s been around for a long time and it’s something that’s very important to a lot of people,” he said.
Between the six teams playing in the tournament there are numerous connections to Humboldt, the Broncos and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
“It kind of takes our mind off it a little bit. I’m sure everyone’s been thinking about it and I think it’s a way to pay our respects,” said Rosetown Red Wings forward Kyle Stroh, a former teammate of Mark Cross, the Broncos assistant coach who died in the crash.
“I think everyone that’s been involved would want us to be out here.”
Red Wings forward Ryan Keller said the tournament can play a role in the healing process.
“People gather around a hockey rink again and you try to enjoy yourself whether you’re a spectator or a player and you find that togetherness as a group.”
