“When you’re selling your house, there’s some definite no-nos.”
One of those no-nos, said Arthur, is having a play structure in the backyard.
Homeowners might think outdoor playhouses are a great investment but in Winnipeg, Arthur said, they actually reduce the number of potential buyers. Arthur suggests to sell the play structure first, before listing the home.

“If they don’t have a child who’s going to use that, the first thing they think when they walk into the yard is, ‘I gotta get rid of that’.”
Arthur said one of the growing trends he’s noticing in the real estate market is the investment in privacy.
“We have bigger houses on smaller lots, so everybody’s looking into your backyard,” Arthur said, “Whenever you can give a sense of privacy in your space, your house is worth more money.”
Arthur suggests homeowners steer away from trees as it takes many years for them to mature. Instead, he said man-made options like lattice and pergolas can give instant privacy. Another option that offers instant privacy, is the use of a shed. Arthur said decks and patios can also help entice buyers.

Since many potential buyers usually view homes in the evenings after work, Arthur said the use of outdoor lighting in the front yard can help boost curb appeal once the sun has set.
Carson is scheduled to appear at the 2018 Winnipeg Home and Garden Show at the RBC Convention Centre Apr. 5-8. He can be found at the Urban Barn main stage throughout the show.
