Napanee, ON — In the past two weeks, officers at the Napanee OPP have received three complaints about a young man and woman stopping drivers and approaching pedestrians asking for money for gas.
According to police, the pair have been approaching people on the corner of Centre Street and Richmond Boulevard and approaching pedestrians in parking lots in that area offering to exchange jewelry for cash.
Const. Juliane Porrit said that the couple are offering an 18-karat gold ring and a gold chain. Porrit could not confirm whether anyone had bought the jewelry, but she said the OPP knows the jewelry is fake.
According to police, the false story they give is: “My vehicle is out of gas or broken down on the highway and we have to get home.”
Porrit also noted that the couple has been described as young, European and maybe driving in a burgundy Jeep.
Porrit added although the police are not sure of the couple’s identity, they did see a similar scam last summer.
Napanee OPP would like to hear from anyone who has been approached or has information related to this couple. Please call Napanee OPP 613-354-3369 or report anonymously at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477 or online with tipsubmit.com.
