Empress Street currently top of Winnipeg’s ‘Worst Roads’ list

The votes haven’t all been cast, but Winnipeg’s worst road so far won’t shock anyone.

The oft-maligned Empress Street in St. James is in the top spot on CAA Manitoba’s list of Worst Roads for 2018 Wednesday.

“Empress Street is one of the roughest routes for bikes, pedestrians and vehicles and not surprisingly, it’s holding steady at the top of the list so far,” Liz Kulyk, corporate manager of government and community relations of CAA Manitoba, stated in a media release.

The Worst Roads survey has been extended an extra week, until April 25.

CAA Manitoba said they wanted to give people a longer voting period since winter has failed to loosen its grip on the city.

“According to weather specialists, this is the coldest April we’ve experienced in 20 years – which means there’s a slow start to cycling this season,” Kulyk said.

“We want to give people time to tune up their bike, dust off their walking shoes, and get outside to see what the state of their neighbourhood streets look like after a thaw. It’s one thing to drive down the street and see the road rubble, but it’s another thing to see it up close when you’re trying to navigate crumbling pavement on your evening run or bike ride.”

Anyone wishing to place a vote can do so online once per day until the deadline.
