Careless smoking is being blamed on a fire that claimed the life of a woman at a retirement residence in Bancroft earlier this month.
Fire alarms went off 3 a.m. on March 15 at the R.J. Brooks Living Centre on Alice St.
It prompted the evacuation of the centre which saw 50 residents relocated to the nearby Bancroft Bible Chapel.
The OPP, Bancroft Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Office of the Chief Coroner investigated. They discovered a woman’s body in a second floor unit where the fire was situated and quickly extinguished.
On Tuesday, the victim was identified as Margaret Kellestine, 74, of Bancroft.
“The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the cause of the fire was deemed accidental due to careless smoking,” Bancroft OPP stated on Tuesday afternoon.
