Taber residents campaign for town spray park

Some residents in Taber are hoping a spray park in the town could be a future summer time reality.

Currently residents have to travel out of town if they want to enjoy such an amenity and are now campaigning to see one built in the town’s own backyard.

A member of the Taber Spray Park Volunteer Committee, Sharla Kane, tells Global News it would bring something new and exciting to the community.

“For a grandparent to go and take their grandchild and watch their child run through the water, or even to get wet themselves, it’s so important to encourage that growth, that experience, that excitement and fun,” she adds.

The idea has been in the works for the past three years and recently gained momentum online with more than 1, 000 “Like’s” on the group’s FaceBook page.

However, despite the interest, town officials aren’t jumping aboard the idea too quickly.

Director of Community Services for the Town of Taber, Rob Cressman, says the idea is still at a very infant stage.

“At this point and time a spray park facility isn’t a part of council’s three year capital plan, but we’re always open to hearing from the community, residents and trying to meet the needs of our community,” he adds.

Currently families need to travel to neighboring communities if they want to enjoy a spray park and the group believes the amenity would be well received among Taber’s growing population.

“It’s not just about water coming out of the ground running though it, a lot of it is the development aspects that you’re offering children, teens and adults of all ages,” Kane says.

The group believes a location downtown would benefit both residents and businesses.

“It does make sense to have it downtown where people can see it, it’s visible, and the parking is there. It helps to encourage some growth for our businesses, the local businesses, and brings some vibrance into the town, something new and exciting,” she says.

Kane recognizes there’s more than just location to consider; like safety, environment and cost for example.

However, Kane says it isn’t a development that will happen overnight and believes the effort is well worth the summer time fun.

The group is hoping to present their proposal to Taber’s Park and Recreation Board for their April meeting.
