Longtime community advocate Carol Winter is being recognized by the Peterborough Pathway of Fame with the first Memorial Award.

Winter, dubbed “Saint Carol” by many in Peterborough, was known for her decades of tireless work as a poverty advocate in the city.

She died in September 2017 at age 75.

The Pathway of Fame, which recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals and community builders, has created the Memorial Award of which Winter will be the first recipient.

The Memorial Award is not an annual honour – rather the board will present it when it deems an individual is worthy of the award.

Winter will also be inducted posthumously into the Pathway of Fame at its ceremony on Sept. 8 at Showplace Performance Centre.

“Ms. Winter was many things for many people and the members of the Pathway of Fame committee felt strongly that special recognition should be afforded [to] her,” said interim board chairman Sean Eyre.

Eyre says the memorial award aims to ensure Winter’s “wholehearted and untiring efforts” to improve the lives of the underprivileged will always be remembered.

“It was not that most of us did not feel Ms. Winter would be nominated in one or more of the categories,” said Eyre.

“It was just unanimously felt and agreed that her activism and influence for the mostly forgotten and ignored [deserves] special recognition.”

Nominations for this year’s Pathway of Fame are due April 30. Nomination forms are available at Package Plus at 171 Rink St., or online.
