Alberta’s Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray will be down to one lane for northbound traffic until further notice after an ammonia leak forced its closure on Monday afternoon.
The RCMP said a collision between a tanker truck and a grader cause the leak at about 2:30 p.m. The truck was hauling two tanks of ammonia.
On Tuesday, RCMP said the ammonia had been successfully transferred and the semi truck and two tankers had been removed from the scene. A diesel spill on the highway had also been cleaned up.
Crews are still working to repair and remove the grader.
Drivers should expect cleanup crews to remain on scene, about 50 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, until further notice.
Police shut down northbound and southbound traffic on the highway and diverted it onto Highway 881 for several hours Monday.
Nobody was injured as a result of the crash and police continue to investigate what caused it.
Shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, Mounties said the southbound lane of the highway was being opened to both northbound and southbound traffic.
