Winnipeg mom guilty of child abduction faces new charges

A Winnipeg mom who pleaded guilty to abducting her two children is now facing new charges.

Sandra Giesbrecht, 45, was arrested in June 2016 and charged with two counts of abduction after her then nine-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl were found with her after their caregivers reported them missing.

Giesbrecht was banned from having any unauthorized contact with her children at the time of the abduction.

A five day search came to an end when she was found in a vehicle with the children in west Winnipeg.

The chase ended in a wooded area behind 100 Deer Lodge Pl., where Giesbrecht abandoned her vehicle, fleeing with her children on foot. She was arrested and her children were taken into care.

Court records show she pleaded guilty to the charges on July 10, 2017, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 7.

Giesbrecht was expected in court Monday morning to deal issues related to her bail but the hearing had to be adjourned. Giesbrecht was arrested and taken into police custody again on Mar. 16.

She is now facing six new charges including multiple counts of failing to comply with a court imposed condition ordering her not to be within 200 metres of her children. She is also charged with impersonating a police officer.

Giesbrecht and the children’s father had previously been locked in a lengthy custody battle for more than two years.

When the children went missing Global News obtained court documents from the custody battle that expressed:

“…concerns about the security of the children and fears an abduction attempt. The court finds that the mother’s behaviour is both erratic and dangerous. Her past behaviour demonstrates that she is willing to go to any means necessary to get what she wants.”

Giesbrecht could face a maximum of 20 years in prison for abduction.
