Saskatoon police are cracking down on drivers making U-turns in school zones.
Police said there has been an increase in violations and complaints over the last several weeks, usually during dismissal time at elementary schools when students are picked up.
They said it is dangerous as children who are walking, running, and playing in a school zone may not anticipate a change in a vehicle’s direction.
Police added drivers may not see what is happening outside their vehicle as U-turns change the driver’s blind spot.
Members of the traffic unit focus on illegal U-turns in school zones all week, which carries a fine of $90.
School zone traffic laws, including a 30 km/h speed limit, are in effect Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT including statutory holidays, between September and June.
