TORONTO – One of the city’s brand new streetcars hit the rails overnight, offering curious onlookers a sneak peek at the future of Toronto transit.
The Bombardier-built streetcar made the journey from the TTC’s Hillcrest facility to Bathurst Station and back.
“Maiden on-street test of new streetcar a success,” TTC spokesman Brad Ross tweeted.
The new streetcars — longer, lower and sleeker than the ones currently on Toronto streets — are expected to go into service next year.
The TTC spent $1.2 billion on 204 of the new streetcars, which can accommodate up to 251 riders. There is space onboard for two bikes and two wheelchairs.
The first new streetcars were delivered to the TTC last September and will be tested on various routes over the next year.
Due to “popular demand,” according to Ross, he tweeted several more photos Thursday afternoon.PHOTOS: The TTC’s new streetcar.
