Basketball teams from Immaculata High School in Kelowna made B.C. sports history over the weekend.
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both won senior 1A championship titles. Remarkably, the teams shared a head coach.
Dino Gini has coached Immaculata teams in the past, but this is the first time he coached both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
He was with the boys’ team at the provincial championships in Abbotsford, but kept in touch with the girls’ team over the internet.
Gini, who usually likes to take a ‘hands-on’ approach with his teams, credits his assistant coaches with helping to pull off the double win.
It is the first time a B.C. high school has won both the boys’ and girls’ senior 1A championships in the same year. It is also the first time boys’ and girls’ championship teams had the same head coach.
Immaculata has now won a total of six provincial girls’ basketball championships and one boys’ championship.
