Special Air Quality Statement

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Saskatoon for stagnant winds under a ridge of high pressure creating elevated pollution levels.

If you are having difficulty breathing, be sure to remain indoors as air quality health index values have reached into the moderate health risk category in the city on Monday.

Air quality is expected to improve Tuesday as a westerly flow comes into the area.

Saskatoon Forecast

Monday

It was a misty, smoggy and sunny morning in Saskatoon under a ridge of high pressure that has calmed winds and helped cool us down to -16 to start the day with wind chills into the -20s.

We managed to make it up into minus single digits before noon under sunny skies with light mist reported at the airport.

Sunshine continued for the remainder of the day as we climbed up to an afternoon high in mid-minus single digits.

Tuesday

-20 is around what it’ll feel like with wind chill Tuesday morning with fog expected to reduce visibility through the early part of the day as warmer air tries to push in, but cools and condenses as it slides in over the cold, snowy ground.

A change in our air flow should help improve air quality during the day as we sit under mostly sunny skies and climb up to an afternoon high just shy of the freezing mark.

Wednesday-Friday

The upper ridge of high pressure holds us in the mild air for the rest of the week with a brisk wind kicking in Wednesday and Thursday, helping push daytime highs toward and possibly even above the freezing mark.

A blocking pattern in the upper atmosphere known as an Omega Block keeps conditions warm and sunny right into the middle of the week. SkyTracker Weather

Mostly sunny skies with some fog is expected early Wednesday before clouds roll back in Thursday and stick around on Friday as winds start to ease back.
