Visitation, protest planned after child killed by garbage truck

TORONTO – Family and friends of a 5-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a garbage truck last week plan to protest outside of City Hall Tuesday afternoon.

Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was struck by the truck last Thursday while trying to cross Cliffside Drive near East Haven Drive just before 4 p.m.

Callaghan-Belanger was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 6-year-old and 13-year-old also suffered injuries in the incident.

Members of the east-end community are expected to gather at City Hall around 4 p.m. to demand accountability.

On Thursday, Mayor Rob Ford released a statement of condolences and said the City will cooperate with the investigation.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the victims during this difficult time,” he said. “My thoughts and prayers, and I’m sure those of every parent in Toronto, are with the children, their families and friends. We will do everything we can to assist the families. The City will cooperate fully with the investigation.”

Visitation for Callaghan-Belanger will be held at McDougall & Brown Funeral Home with the funeral to follow Wednesday.
