A Hamilton man is facing mischief charges after several businesses on Ottawa Street were tagged with spray paint earlier this week.
Police say the arrest came after CHCH aired footage of a man spray-painting property. The station reported the vandalism occurred on Monday night.

“As a result of the video footage that was shared during the news story, Hamilton police were able to identify the male and make an arrest,” police stated in a news release on Friday.

A 24-year-old man, whom police have not identified, is facing five counts of mischief. He is expected in court on April 10.

News of the arrest comes a day after Hamilton police chief Eric Girt responded to criticism from the business community that police aren’t doing enough to combat vandalism.

On The Bill Kelly Show on Thursday, Girt said police are taking the issue seriously.
“We have had prosecutions, in fact, criminal prosecutions,” Girt said. “This is not a nuisance offence; this is a mischief. We have had people incarcerated for these offences and vandalism. So that is our approach. It’s not that we take it as a nuisance and that it’s not important. It’s very important.”
