Alberta’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting at an Athabasca, Alta. apartment building on Friday morning.

In a news release, the RCMP said officers were called to a disturbance at the building at about 10:17 a.m. They said when officers “approached the suspect to investigate further, a confrontation occurred leading to the discharge of an officer’s firearm.”

The suspect who was shot was airlifted to hospital and was in stable condition as of Friday night, the RCMP said.

Police declined to say what type of disturbance they were investigating or if the suspect was armed.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating. ASIRT investigates incidents involving law enforcement officers across the province that result in serious injury or death, as well as sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
