A great grandmother from Nakusp is lucky to be alive after a fiery crash in the North Okanagan.
She was trapped inside her burning car, after it left Highway 6 and struck a tree.
As flames spread through the vehicle, some brave witnesses struggled to force open the doors and pull her to safety.
On Thursday, the driver and her rescuers were reunited for the first time since the harrowing experience.
“I sat there and I said: Well I guess this is it,” says Margaret Hollingsworth.
She was trapped inside her burning car.
Her Oldsmobile caught fire after it swerved off the road near Cherryville and slammed into a tree — the impact jamming the cars’ doors shut.
That’s when Dan Balcean and two relatives happened upon the crash.
Balcean risked his own safety to try and get Hollingsworth out of the burning car that had a full tank of gas.
“And he literally pried the door frame back and him and a second male were able to pull her out of the burning car, says RCMP Corporal Henry Proce.
Shortly after they pulled her out, the car erupted into flames.
Hollingsworth was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital with only minor injuries.
The great grandmother to over 30 kids, says she owes her life to her rescuers.
“There’s nothing I can say except thank you,” says Hollingsworth.
