A 30-year-old woman died in hospital hours after she was rescued from a house fire in south Edmonton earlier this week, Global News has learned.
Friends identified the victim as Ilyssa Kanerva and she leaves behind a young son. A memorial page has been set up on Facebook, as well as a GoFundMe to collect donations for a celebration of her life.
The fire broke out in a home in south Edmonton’s Pleasantview neighbourhood Tuesday morning.
Firefighters and EMS were called to a 1940s-era bungalow on 109 Street near 58 Avenue shortly before 7:30 a.m., arriving a few minutes later to find it engulfed in flames.

Edmonton Fire Rescue said there was fire in the basement, main floor and attic. Two men in the home managed to get out on their own, but the woman had to be rescued by firefighters. A dog was killed in the fire.
The woman was taken to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, Alberta Health Services said, while the two men in stable condition were taken to hospital to be checked over. The woman passed away later that day.
All three people were between 20 and 40 years old.
The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes. Fire investigators are still determining the cause, but damage is pegged at $194,000: $170,000 to the home, and $24,000 to the contents.
