A Guelph-based road maintenance company has been slapped with a $70,000 fine after a construction worker was severely burned by hot tar in Toronto in 2016.
The incident happened on Sept. 26 at Logan and Danforth avenues and emergency crews found the man encased in the molten tar inside a truck.
Toronto police said a container carrying tar inside a truck shifted when the driver hit the brakes hard, spilling over onto the victim.
Fire crews said the tar was heated to about 200 C and it took firefighters about an hour to free the man.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Labour announced R&N Maintenance, also known as Rann Maintenance, pleaded guilty to charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and was fined $70,000.
The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim surcharge.
