Stony Plain gas line that caused evacuations now capped: RCMP

The Stony Plain, Alta., gas line that was struck Wednesday afternoon has now been capped and access has been returned to the area, RCMP said Thursday morning.

Gas service was restored at 3:55 Thursday morning.

The Town of Stony Plain reported a “complication” while installing new traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 628 and Westerra Drive/High Park Road at around 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon. About 20 minutes later, the town confirmed a gas line had been struck.

ATCO was on the scene at around 3 p.m. working to restore full service. At the time, the company hoped to have service repaired at around 11 p.m.

Buildings in the area were evacuated and buses weren’t allowed to pick up students from nearby schools until 3:45 p.m. Surrounding roads were closed until 9:20 p.m., while access to the High Park neighbourhood was closed until around 9:15 a.m. Thursday.

Residents should have noticed their furnaces kick back on in newer homes. ATCO is going door-to-door to service older homes. Anyone whose furnace didn’t turn back on is asked to call ATCO’s emergency line at 1-800-511-3447.
