City cracks down on improper fencing at construction sites

The city of Calgary is responding to hundreds of complaints from the public by getting tough on construction companies that don’t have proper fencing and signage around their sites.

The city will be prosecuting more offenders and when it does, offending companies will face higher fines. The maximum for a first offence under provincial safety codes has gone from $15,000 to $100,000.

The city’s chief building inspector says it’s all about keeping the public safe.

“We’ve had a number of complaints of kids playing at excavation sites and numerous complaints of people tripping,” Marco Civitares told Global. “We also want to protect children as some of these sites are close to schools and playgrounds.”

Civateres says adequate access to the site in the event of an emergency is also important.
