An environmental response team is responding to a fuel spill off the B.C. coast involving a naval ship.
The Canadian Armed Forces say HMCS Calgary spilled 30,000 litres of fuel into the Strait of Georgia on Saturday morning.
The spill involved F-76 fuel, which is similar to kerosene and tends not to affect marine life, Commodore Buck Zwick, Commander of the Pacific Fleet of the Royal Canadian Navy, said Sunday.
Zwick said officials at Environment and Climate Change Canada have “completed detailed modelling of what would be the potential effects of this spill on the shoreline.”
“Their models indicate a very limited impact.”
Based at CFB Esquimalt, HMCS Calgary is one of 12 helicopter-carrying vessels crewed by members of the Royal Canadian Navy. The ship returned to duty in 2015 after undergoing upgrades.
