Chinatown housing advocates ‘The Chinatown Action Group’ want the president of the Beedie Development Group to meet them about the proposed condo tower at 105 Keefer St on Monday.
It’s also scheduled a rally and ‘community hearing’ for that same day at the developer’s downtown office.
Spokesperson Nat Lowe says it wants to meet Ryan Beedie because residents in the area face a housing crisis.
“Because of the needs of residents, they don’t want to see gentrification. They don’t want to see rents rising, and that’s rapidly happening throughout Chinatown. So, residents want to see 100 per cent social housing and a community space, because those are the things that will fit the community’s needs. A lot of the seniors face social isolation and whatnot.”
Lowe says the company’s appeal for the project has been denied again, this time by the Board of Variance.
“What we’re saying now is that this is definitely a victory, and we definitely think that the Board of Variance listened to the people in denying the appeal request. But, now we’re still calling on Ryan Beedie to give up the land so that the City and the government can build 100 per cent social housing at low income rates.”
President Ryan Beedie has not yet responded to a request for comment.
