SGI calling for improvement on impaired driving

Leading up to the New Year, SGI had asked Saskatchewan drivers to make a resolution to #DriveSober in 2018, and on Friday, the results came in indicating how drivers did in the first month and we’re learning there are definitely improvements to be made.

In the first month of 2018, our province saw 253 impaired driving offenses, which is better than last January where we saw 276 offenses.

According to police, the 253 impaired-driving offenses province-wide include:

  • 147 Criminal Code charges such as blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeding .08, impaired driving or refusing a breath test
  • 68 roadside suspensions (experienced drivers with a BAC ranging from .04 to .08)

Other results from the January spotlight included:

  • 500 distracted driving offenses with 416 being related to cell phone use
  • 312 offenses related to seatbelts or car seats
  • 4,612 speeding/aggressive driving offenses

Impaired driving will be the focus throughout 2018. The February Traffic Safety Spotlight is on seatbelts and car seats.
