UPDATE: Highway 33 east of Kelowna has now re-opened after a logging truck fire shut down the road Thursday morning.
Emergency crews are on the scene of a logging truck fire on Highway 33 east of Kelowna.
Crews responded to a semi on fire at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday east of the Eight Mile Ranch turnoff.
The driver of the unloaded logging truck, Reid Forman, told Global News he pulled over when noticed smoke coming out of the dashboard and vents.
He said he tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher but the flames only grew.
That’s when he and his dog jumped out of the truck.
The fire destroyed the semi’s engine compartment as well as the cab.
The driver was not hurt.
The highway remains closed in both directions.
There is a detour around the fire scene via Cardinal Creek Road.
